Getting stuck in town for a few days isn’t so bad! I helped a polie officer rescue a fawn and had a lot of fun recovering in Harpers Ferry.
I always thought those clips were so worthless too! Safety pins could work, but I'm thinking I'd want something similar to a hair barrette (so basically a thick safety pin) so that the pull on the fabric is more evenly distributed instead of super tight and thin where the safety pin is applied.
